WTSA Traveling Fellowship for Residents, Trainees, and Practicing Surgeons

December 15, 2019 Past Recipients Application

The goal of this traveling fellowship is to promote interaction and learning between residents / trainees / practicing surgeons and WTSA members. The traveling fellow will visit a University-affiliated or academic practice of his/her choosing, within the boundaries of the WTSA (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming along with Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan), for a period of one to two weeks, under the sponsorship of a Western member at the hosting institution. The traveling fellow does not need to be a WTSA member; the award is open to any resident / trainee / practicing surgeon.

Conditions of 2020 Award
The awardee will notify WTSA Council of acceptance or refusal of the award by February 1, 2020. If the first-identified awardee cannot complete the traveling fellowship, the WTSA Council will select one of the alternates for the traveling fellowship. The award will then be announced publicly at the 46th WTSA Annual Meeting, June 24 – 27, 2020, in Vail, Colorado; it is requested that the awardee be present at this meeting to receive the award. The awardee will contact the sponsoring member and make arrangements to complete the fellowship during the period of July 1, 2020, to June 22, 2021. It is requested that the awardee attend the 47th WTSA Annual Meeting, June 23–26, 2021, in Victoria, BC, Canada, and make an oral presentation at that meeting about the traveling fellowship experience.

Identification of Host Department and Sponsoring WTSA Member
Applicants for the traveling fellowship will identify the institutions and WTSA members (3 to 5 members) who might be solicited as potential hosts. After identification of the traveling fellow, WTSA Council will assist the awardee selecting the site to be visited, especially if an introduction is desirable or necessary.

Fellowship Stipend
A stipend of up to 5,000 USD will be provided to the traveling fellow, to defray reasonable costs for travel, lodging, and meals. Expenses will be reimbursed by the Treasurer of the WTSA, upon receipt of the fellow’s written report and summary of expenses.
